Rafael began a journalistic career of more than two decades as a reporter in the Business section of El Nuevo Día, where he covered topics such as telecommunications, media, manufacturing and economic development. As editor of the Business section, he renewed the editorial offerings, created the GFR Media Speaker Series and was a key player in the development of Mejores Patronos.

As general editor and subdirector of El Nuevo Día he led, along with his team, transcendental coverage for Puerto Rico, including the passage of Hurricane María and the reconstruction, debt restructuring and the effects of the pandemic. His work has earned him awards from multiple journalism associations and guilds.
